Heterostructures of Graphene and Topological Insulators Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, and Sb2Te3

Klaus Zollner et al.

Summary: Prototypical 3D topological insulators of the Bi2Se3 family demonstrate the appearance of surface states within the bulk bandgap due to spin-orbit coupling-induced topology. On the other hand, graphene placed on the surface of a topological insulator shows interesting electronic properties of its Dirac electrons, induced by giant spin-orbit coupling through the proximity effect.

Observation of Time-Reversal Invariant Helical Edge-Modes in Bilayer Graphene/WSe2 Heterostructure

Priya Tiwari et al.

Summary: This study reports the experimental realization of time-reversal invariant helical edge-modes in bilayer graphene/monolayer WSe2-based heterostructures, which are considered as precursors to generic topological insulators. The topological phase observed in the study is characterized by bulk bandgap and helical edge-modes with quantized electrical conductance. The study also demonstrates the tunability of different topological phases with electric and magnetic fields, allowing for topological phase transitions between trivial and distinct phases.

Electric-Field-Tunable Valley Zeeman Effect in Bilayer Graphene Heterostructures: Realization of the Spin-Orbit Valve Effect

Priya Tiwari et al.

Summary: This study reports the discovery of electric-field-induced transition from a topologically trivial to a topologically nontrivial band structure in an atomically sharp heterostructure of bilayer graphene (BLG) and single-layer WSe2, based on the theoretical predictions of Gmitra and Fabian. The analysis shows that this bandstructure evolution arises from an interplay between proximity-induced strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and the layer polarizability in BLG. The results demonstrate the potential for achieving highly tunable devices based on the valley Zeeman effect in dual-gated two-dimensional materials.

Observation of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov States in Superconducting Graphene

Eva Cortes del Rio et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the first observation of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states in graphene, a non-superconducting 2D material, without the involvement of magnetic atoms. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, these special Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states were found to have local magnetic properties and can extend beyond the grain boundaries.

Electrical and thermal generation of spin currents by magnetic bilayer graphene

Talieh S. Ghiasi et al.

Summary: The coupling of bilayer graphene with the 2D interlayer antiferromagnetic CrSBr enables the active generation of spin currents in graphene, benefiting ultracompact spintronic devices. The strong spin-charge coupling in graphene and the high sensitivity of spin transport to the adjacent antiferromagnet's magnetization allow for the read-out of a single magnetic sublattice.

Electrical Control of Valley-Zeeman Spin-Orbit-Coupling-Induced Spin Precession at Room Temperature

Josep Ingla-Aynes et al.

Summary: The ultimate goal of spintronics is to achieve electrically controlled coherent manipulation of electron spin at room temperature for devices such as spin field-effect transistors. The use of 2D materials with strong spin anisotropy and valley character provides unique control knobs for manipulating spin precession. Experimental results have shown successful coherent spin precession in the absence of an external magnetic field, even in the diffusive regime, by manipulating spin-orbit coupling in bilayer graphene.

Imaging orbital ferromagnetism in a moire Chern insulator

C. L. Tschirhart et al.

Summary: Researchers have found that electrons in moire flat band systems can break time-reversal symmetry, leading to a quantized anomalous Hall effect, with magnetism primarily orbital in nature. The study also reveals a significant change in magnetization as the chemical potential crosses the quantum anomalous Hall gap, consistent with the expected contribution of chiral edge states to the magnetization in an orbital Chern insulator. Additionally, mapping the spatial evolution of field-driven magnetic reversal shows reproducible micrometer-scale domains pinned to structural disorder.
