A History and Perspective of Non-Fullerene Electron Acceptors for Organic Solar Cells

Ardalan Armin et al.

Summary: Organic solar cells have evolved from relying on fullerenes as acceptors to the emergence of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) which have significantly improved cell efficiencies. However, NFAs challenge the traditional understanding of organic solar cell operation, requiring rethinking of morphology, charge generation, and recombination.

Excitons Dominate the Emission from PM6:Y6 Solar Cells, but This Does Not Help the Open-Circuit Voltage of the Device

Lorena Perdigon-Toro et al.

Summary: The research findings show that the radiative recombination in the blend of non-fullerene acceptors with donor polymer is mainly due to the re-occupation and decay of Y6 singlet excitons, contributing less than 1% to total recombination. The open-circuit voltage of the blend is determined by the energetics and kinetics of the charge-transfer state, rather than the radiative recombination of free charges caused by the Y6 singlet excitons.

Requirements for Making Thick Junctions of Organic Solar Cells based on Nonfullerene Acceptors

Mathias Nyman et al.

Summary: To produce organic bulk-heterojunction solar cells with thick active layers and high efficiencies based on nonfullerene acceptors, it is important to consider factors such as charge carrier mobility, unintentional doping concentrations, and bimolecular recombination prefactor.
