Multidimensional assessment of global dryland changes under future warming in climate projections

Cicheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Drylands are home to over one-third of the world's population and are at risk of anthropogenic climate change. Despite climate models projecting an expansion of global drylands in the future, considering the impact of atmospheric CO2 concentration on vegetation water consumption leads to a slower expansion rate than previously reported. Changes in hydrologic and agro-ecological perspectives show significant shrinkage in drylands over the coming decades, indicating reduced aridity in these regions. Additionally, the study demonstrates that while net radiation primarily drives the expansion of atmospheric drylands, increases in precipitation and vegetation water use efficiency play key roles in changes in hydrologic and agro-ecological drylands.

Range-wide assessment of the impact of China's nature reserves on giant panda habitat quality

Hongbo Yang et al.

Summary: Protected areas are essential for global conservation efforts, but their impact on wildlife habitat quality is still poorly understood. Research indicates that nature reserves have a significant positive impact on giant panda habitat suitability, especially in areas vulnerable to human pressure, with central government-supported reserves performing better than locally supported ones.

Exploring the multiple land degradation pathways across the planet

Remus Pravalie

Summary: This review paper explores global land degradation through an interdisciplinary and holistic approach, identifying 17 different pathways of land degradation. Among them, five major pathways are considered crucial, eroding ecosystem functions and services. The study emphasizes the urgent need for multidimensional research on land degradation and advocates for prioritizing it in governmental and international policies.

Situating China in the Global Effort to Combat Desertification

Zheng-Hong Kong et al.

Summary: International efforts led by UNCCD focus on participatory approaches to tackle desertification. China has made significant progress in this area, but its methods have been controversial and the sustainability of its achievements is in question. China can offer valuable insights to the international campaign while also learning from the efforts of other countries.

Climate change impacts on water security in global drylands

Lindsay C. Stringer et al.

Summary: Water scarcity affects 1-2 billion people globally, with millions more projected to face severe water stress in the future. Efficient water management, technology, and infrastructure, along with comprehensive demand and supply management, can help ensure more equitable access to water resources. Coherent system-oriented policies and institutions are necessary to support dryland water governance and address synergies and trade-offs between water security and sustainable development.
