Determining Dark-Matter-Electron Scattering Rates from the Dielectric Function

Yonit Hochberg et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the rate for dark-matter-electron scattering in any material can be determined by the experimentally measurable complex dielectric function, for interactions coupling to electron density. The formulation includes many-body effects, eliminates theoretical uncertainties, and allows calibration of the spectrum by electromagnetic probes. The research has significant implications for semiconductor and superconductor targets, with superconductor detectors surpassing previous estimates in detecting light mediators.

Sun heated MeV-scale dark matter and the XENON1T electron recoil excess

Yifan Chen et al.

Summary: The XENON1T collaboration reported an excess of low-energy electron recoil events and explored the possibility of explaining it with MeV-scale dark matter heated by the Sun. Different form factors of DM-electron interactions were studied and the inclusion of Sun-heated DM improved the fit to the data. Inferred DM-electron scattering cross sections were obtained and constraints for these form factors were derived, showing stronger results than previous studies.

Dark matter absorption via electronic excitations

Andrea Mitridate et al.

Summary: The study revisits the calculation of bosonic dark matter absorption via electronic excitations, clarifying the relationship between different types of dark matter and the optical properties of target materials. It highlights the unique case of scalar dark matter, where the absorption rates are not directly related to photon absorption due to contributions from different operators. Reliable first-principles numerical calculations and/or semi-analytic modeling are essential for predicting detection rates accurately.

Describing the Migdal effect with a bremsstrahlung-like process and many-body effects

Zheng-Liang Liang et al.

Summary: Recent theoretical studies have shown that recoiled atoms struck by dark matter particles are more likely to excite or lose electrons than previously thought, opening up a new avenue for exploring sub-GeV dark matter particles. By incorporating the bremsstrahlung process and electronic many-body effects, a full description of the Migdal effect in bulk semiconductor targets like diamond and silicon has been achieved, with significantly larger event rates in the low energy regime. Additionally, it was found that the effect of bremsstrahlung photons mediating the Coulomb interaction between recoiled ions and electron-hole pairs is equivalent to the exchange of a single phonon.

Crystal responses to general dark matter-electron interactions

Riccardo Catena et al.

Summary: A formalism is developed to describe the scattering of dark matter particles by electrons bound in crystals. By evaluating crystal response functions, the strength of dark matter-electron interactions can be constrained with 90% confidence level limits.

Dark matter-electron scattering in dielectrics

Simon Knapen et al.

Summary: The paper introduces an alternative formulation for dark matter-electron scattering that takes into account in-medium screening effects automatically. It demonstrates a significant reduction in reach for direct detection experiments using dielectric materials as targets. The study also explores different determinations of the dielectric response.

Silicon carbide detectors for sub-GeV dark matter

Sinead M. Griffin et al.

Summary: Silicon carbide (SiC) is proposed as a novel material for direct detection of sub-GeV dark matter due to its unique properties and tunable sensitivity to various dark matter models. SiC holds much promise as a dark matter detector, combined with its widespread use as an alternative to silicon in other detector technologies.

Directional dark matter detection in anisotropic Dirac materials

Ahmet Coskuner et al.

Summary: This paper characterizes the daily modulation rate of dark matter interaction with a Dirac material, finding that in ZrTe5, the daily modulation is a fraction of the total rate determined by the orientation of the material's dielectric tensor with respect to the dark matter wind. This large modulation allows for rapid verification or ruling out of any putative dark matter scattering signal by changing the crystal orientation and observing how the daily modulation pattern changes.
