A 3D-bioprinted scaffold with doxycycline-controlled BMP2-expressing cells for inducing bone regeneration and inhibiting bacterial infection

Minqi Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the creation of a scaffold with dual functions of osteo-induction and bacterial inhibition through the release of BMP2, which significantly promotes osteoblast differentiation and prevents infection. The bioprinted scaffold shows potential for repairing infectious bone defects.

Design and implementation of a low cost bio-printer modification, allowing for switching between plastic and gel extrusion

Adolf Krige et al.

Summary: This study presents an affordable bio-printer modification based on the popular Prusa i3 3D printer, which retains the original functionality. It enables aseptic bioprinting setup using disposable syringes and easily sterilizable parts, and supports two-component printing and UV curing. The modification allows for printing and curing artificial biofilm of electro-active bacteria, demonstrating its capabilities for microbial fuel cell applications.

Extracellular electron transfer across bio-nano interfaces for CO2 electroreduction

Zhaodong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electro-catalytic conversion of CO2 to acetate by acetogenic bacteria on semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. The findings suggest direct extracellular electron transfer at the bio-nano interface and show that the availability of electrochemically produced H-2 does not limit the efficiency of CO2 electro-reduction. Isotope labeling studies demonstrated high Faradaic efficiency for CO2 electro-reduction at the SWCNT/bacterium interface.
