Novel Preosteoclast Populations in Obesity-Associated Periodontal Disease

K. H. Kwack et al.

Summary: The study suggests that expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in obese mice may contribute to the formation of osteoclasts during periodontitis, leading to increased alveolar bone destruction. This provides a more detailed mechanistic understanding of the interplay between obesity and periodontitis.

Sex- and injury-based differences in knee biomechanics in mouse models of post-traumatic osteoarthritis

Carina L. Blaker et al.

Summary: Sex and joint injury play important roles in the onset and progression of osteoarthritis. This study evaluated passive anterior-posterior knee biomechanics in male and female mice, finding that joint laxity was comparable between sexes but joint stiffness was greater in females. The anterior-posterior joint mechanics were significantly affected by the loss of the ACL, regardless of the injury model used.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells in obesity-associated periodontal disease: A conceptual model

Kyu Hwan Kwack et al.

Summary: Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease characterized by destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth. Severe periodontitis affects 10%-15% of adults and is associated with negative comorbidities. There is a clear relationship between obesity and incidence of periodontal disease, but the biological mechanisms are not fully understood. A new two-hit model is proposed to explain obesity-exacerbated periodontal bone loss, emphasizing the role of myeloid-derived suppressor cells.
