Time-Domain Procedures for Lightning-Induced Voltage Calculation in Electromagnetic Transient Simulators

Alberto De Conti et al.

Summary: Two time-domain procedures are proposed for calculating lightning-induced voltages using lossy transmission line models in electromagnetic transient simulators. The procedures represent the influence of incident electromagnetic fields as current sources at the ends of the illuminated line. One procedure is formulated in the phase-domain and compatible with the universal line model, while the second procedure is formulated in the modal domain and compatible with the transmission line model proposed by Marti. Validation using a first order FDTD solution shows that both procedures can efficiently and accurately calculate lightning-induced voltages on overhead lines.
