Nitro and Other Electron Withdrawing Group Activated Ruthenium Catalysts for Olefin Metathesis Reactions

Anna Kajetanowicz et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel subclass of chelating-benzylidene ruthenium catalysts that can be activated by electron-withdrawing groups, providing a highly tunable platform for target-oriented synthesis, medicinal chemistry, fine-chemicals preparation, and materials chemistry. The paper also offers suggestions for end-users on minimizing catalyst loading, controlling selectivity, and optimizing the olefin metathesis reaction based on examples provided.

Efficient synthesis of styrene derivatives through ethenolysis of renewable propenylbenzenes

Jesus A. Avendano Villarreal et al.

Summary: Functionalized styrenes were synthesized via ethenolysis of renewable 1-propenylbenzenes using ruthenium-alkylidene complexes with a N-heterocyclic carbene ligand as catalysts, where the bulkiness of the ligand proved to be crucial for catalysis efficiency. Careful selection of reaction conditions was essential for achieving near quantitative yields under mild conditions in short reaction times. Notably, the catalyst load could be decreased to 0.01 mol% while maintaining good conversion and selectivity.

Propylene synthesis via isomerization-metathesis of 1-hexene and FCC olefins

Gyula Novodarszki et al.

Summary: The conversion of 1-hexene to propylene was successfully achieved through a physical mixture of HBEA and MoO3/HBEA catalysts, as well as reactivation of deactivated catalyst in an argon atmosphere. Pre-treatment of catalyst with olefins improved catalyst activity, while MoO3/HBEA catalysts showed a shorter lifetime compared to alumina-containing catalyst mixture.
