Exceptional points in the one-dimensional Hubbard model

Roman Rausch et al.

Summary: The paper presents a new method of analyzing and interpreting spectra in the presence of interactions using non-Hermitian phenomena. By utilizing the density-matrix renormalization group, the existence of exceptional points in the one-dimensional Hubbard chain with chiral symmetry is demonstrated, showing a Fermi arc at zero frequency in the spectrum. These points are a result of the non-Hermiticity of the effective Hamiltonian and are only present at finite temperature.

Fermion Doubling Theorems in Two-Dimensional Non-Hermitian Systems for Fermi Points and Exceptional Points

Zhesen Yang et al.

Summary: The fermion doubling theorem has been extended to non-Hermitian lattice Hamiltonians, focusing on two-dimensional systems without symmetry constraints. Both Fermi points and exceptional points follow doubling theorems, requiring pairs of point nodes. An invariant called the discriminant number is introduced to prove the doubling theorem for exceptional points.

Exceptional topology of non-Hermitian systems

Emil J. Bergholtz et al.

Summary: This review discusses the current understanding of the role of topology in non-Hermitian systems and its physical consequences in dissipative settings, focusing on the concept of exceptional degeneracies and its distinct phenomena, as well as the new notions of gapped phases in single-band systems. The unique sensitivity of non-Hermitian matrices to boundary conditions is highlighted, leading to anomalous relationships between bulk and boundary physics. Additionally, applications of non-Hermitian topology in classical and quantum systems are reviewed, showing its relevance beyond the field of topological phases.

Exceptional non-Hermitian phases in disordered quantum wires

Benjamin Michen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the occurrence of exceptional degeneracies in nodal non-Hermitian phases in chiral-symmetric disordered quantum wires, where at least two nodal points in the clean Hermitian system are required for exceptional points to be effectively stabilized upon adding disorder. The theoretical findings are identified and studied experimentally in the spectral functions and mesoscopic quantum transport properties, and quantitatively corroborated through numerically exact simulations on a microscopic lattice model. The proposed setting offers a conceptually minimal framework for realizing and studying topological non-Hermitian phases in quantum many-body systems.

Universal Hall conductance scaling in non-Hermitian Chern insulators

Solofo Groenendijk et al.

Summary: In this study, we examined the Hall conductance of a two-dimensional Chern insulator coupled to an environment causing gain and loss. We found that strong gain and loss can result in a nonanalytical contribution to the Hall conductance, which exhibits a universal power law behavior near its onset, with a power of 3/2 as a function of Dirac mass, chemical potential, and gain strength. This work paves the way for further research on non-Hermitian topology in fermionic transport experiments.
