Not Carbon s-p Hybridization, but Coordination Number Determines C-H and C-C Bond Length

Pascal Vermeeren et al.

Summary: This study found that the shortening of C-H and C-C bonds is not determined by an increase in s-character at the carbon atoms, but by the diminishing steric repulsion between substituents around the carbon atoms. Therefore, the coordination number decreases as the s-p hybridization changes, leading to this structural trend.
