Two-dimensional optical spatial differentiation and high-contrast imaging

Junxiao Zhou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates for the first time broadband two-dimensional spatial differentiation and high-contrast edge imaging based on a dielectric metasurface across the whole visible spectrum. The method works for both intensity and phase objects simply by inserting the metasurface into a commercial optical microscope, opening up new opportunities for fast, compactible, and power-efficient ultrathin devices in data processing and biological imaging applications.

Topology-Induced Phase Transitions in Spin-Orbit Photonics

Xiaohui Ling et al.

Summary: The phase transition between vortex generation and spin-Hall shift triggered by varying the incidence angle of a spin-polarized light beam at sharp interfaces has been revealed. The abnormal beam contains wave components with distinct topological properties, generating intrinsic and extrinsic orbital angular momenta. By enlarging the incidence angle, the abnormal beam undergoes a phase transition from vortex generation to spin-Hall shift.

Isotropic topological second-order spatial differentiator operating in transmission mode

Olivia Y. Long et al.

Summary: Differentiation is widely used in image processing, with significant advances made using nanophotonic structures and metamaterials. A topological differentiator designed in this study operates isotropically in transmission mode at normal incidence, with an optical transfer function featuring a symmetry-protected topological charge of +/- 2 and performing second-order differentiation, showing potential for optical computing applications.

Polarization evolution on the higher-order Poincare sphere via photonic Dirac points

Wenhao Xu et al.

Summary: A general reflection model is proposed to describe the reflected behaviors of a Gaussian beam near a photonic Dirac point at the optical interface, demonstrating vortical phase distribution and spin inversion for the reflected state. By modulating the incident polarization state, any desired Poincare vortex beam can be generated on a higher-order Poincare sphere.
