In-field degradation of soil-biodegradable plastic mulch films in a Mediterranean climate

Deirdre Griffin-LaHue et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the in-field degradation of soil-biodegradable plastic mulch films through field experiments. The research found that the degradation rate of these mulches may exceed the laboratory standard in certain conditions, with thermal time being more suitable for assessing mulch degradation in the field environment.

Toxic effects of exposure to microplastics with environmentally relevant shapes and concentrations: Accumulation, energy metabolism and tissue damage in oyster Crassostrea gigas

Jia Teng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ingestion and effects of PE and PET microplastics on Crassostrea gigas oysters. Results showed negative impacts of MPs on oyster metabolism and tissue damage, with PET MPs showing greater toxicity than PE MPs. Metabolomics analysis revealed alterations in metabolic profiles in oysters due to MPs exposure.

Effect of Environmental Weathering on Biodegradation of Biodegradable Plastic Mulch Films under Ambient Soil and Composting Conditions

Marife B. Anunciado et al.

Summary: This study compared the biodegradability of agriculturally weathered and unweathered biodegradable plastic mulch films in soil and compost. The research showed that environmental weathering enhances the biodegradation of the films, and the polymeric constituents of the mulch also influence microbial degradation, especially for bacterial communities.

Biodegradable plastics in the air and soil environment: Low degradation rate and high microplastics formation

Jin Liao et al.

Summary: The study found that different types of biodegradable plastics have varying levels of degradation in the natural environment, with poly(p-dioxanone) exhibiting the highest weight loss potential. Microorganisms forming biofilms on its surface played a key role in promoting degradation.

Microplastics generated from a biodegradable plastic in freshwater and seawater

Xin-Feng Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that the biodegradable polymer PBAT produces more plastic fragments/particles in different aquatic environments compared to non-biodegradable LDPE, and exposure to UV-A significantly increases the rate of PBAT microplastic formation. Further evaluation is needed to assess the microplastic risk from biodegradable polymers in various underwater environments.

Biodegradable plastic as an integral part of the solution to plastic waste pollution of the environment

Markus Flury et al.

Summary: Biodegradable plastics are seen as promising alternatives to traditional, persistent plastics, with benefits in packaging, single-use items, and agricultural plastic mulches. However, proper use and management are essential, as well as the need for additional testing to verify biodegradation rates in natural environments. Attention also needs to be paid to additives in biodegradable plastics to prevent environmental hazards.
