Molybdenum-Catalyzed Deoxygenation Coupling of Lignin-Derived Alcohols for Functionalized Bibenzyl Chemicals

Huifang Jiang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel method to transform lignin-derived alcohols into functionalized bibenzyl chemicals, using a molybdenum catalyst for short deoxygenation coupling pathway. The research shows that benzyl carbon-radical is the key intermediate for the formation of bibenzyl products, and the para methoxy and phenolic hydroxyl groups play a role in stabilizing radical intermediates and facilitating selective production of bibenzyl products. The findings provide a promising application for producing functionalized aromatics from biomass-derived materials.

The Chemical Recycling of Polyesters for a Circular Plastics Economy: Challenges and Emerging Opportunities

Jack Payne et al.

Summary: Plastics have been crucial in human development, but increasing environmental concerns have raised public scrutiny and calls for bans. This has led to the development of renewable alternatives and new waste management strategies, with a focus on catalytic chemical recycling of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The emergence of new materials has the potential to modernize the plastics economy, but industrial feasibility and challenges remain.

Reductive C-N Coupling of Nitroarenes: Heterogenization of MoO3 Catalyst by Confinement in Silica

Fu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, nanoporous MoO3 confined in silica was used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for C-N cross-coupling of nitroaromatics with aryl or alkyl boronic acids, producing N-arylamines. The silica not only heterogenized the Mo species in the confined mesoporous microenvironment, but also significantly reduced the reaction induction period and regulated the chemical efficiency of the targeted product. The well-shaped MoO3@m-SiO2 catalyst demonstrated improved catalytic performance compared to homogeneous Mo catalysts, commercial Pd/C, or MoO3 nanoparticles, offering a new avenue for the heterogeneous catalytic synthesis of valuable bioactive molecules.
