Machine Learning Force Fields

Oliver T. Unke et al.

Summary: The use of machine learning in computational chemistry has led to significant advancements, particularly in the development of machine learning-based force fields to bridge the gap between accuracy and efficiency. The key concept is to learn the statistical relations between chemical structure and potential energy, without preconceived notions of fixed bonds. Challenges remain for the next generation of machine learning force fields.

An enhanced sampling QM/AMOEBA approach: The case of the excited state intramolecular proton transfer in solvated 3-hydroxyflavone

Michele Nottoli et al.

Summary: The polarizable quantum mechanical (QM)/AMOEBA approach has been extended to enhanced sampling techniques for studying excited state intramolecular proton transfer. By combining molecular dynamics and umbrella sampling, the fast and slow components of the transfer in two solvents are revealed, with mechanisms involving intramolecular vibrational redistribution and intermolecular hydrogen-bonding. Ground and excited state free energies along an effective reaction coordinate provide detailed analysis of the solvent mediated mechanism.

Efficient Open-Source Implementations of Linear-Scaling Polarizable Embedding: Use Octrees to Save the Trees

Maximilian Scheurer et al.

Summary: The study introduces an efficient method for handling large polarizable environments in computational spectroscopy simulations, utilizing the linear-scaling fast multipole method within the polarizable embedding model. The implementation is tested for accuracy and efficiency on model and biomolecular systems, demonstrating the effectiveness of PE calculations using FMM in a black-box manner. The linear-scaling approach is showcased through simulating the UV/vis spectrum of a chromophore in an environment of over 1 million polarizable sites, with interfaces to open-source quantum chemistry programs for broad accessibility.
