A General Strategy to Control Viscosity Sensitivity of Molecular Rotor-Based Fluorophores

Songtao Ye et al.

Summary: By chemically installing extended pi-rich alternating carbon-carbon linkages between the rotational electron donors and acceptors of RBFs, the lack of control of their viscosity sensitivity has been resolved. The length of the linkage strongly influences the viscosity sensitivity, providing the possibility to design RBFs with different viscosity sensitivities. RBFs can differentiate misfolded protein oligomers and insoluble aggregates in test tubes and live cells through a dual-color imaging strategy.

Single-atom switching as a general approach to designing colorimetric and fluorogenic probes for mercury ions

Axel Loredo et al.

Summary: A simple and general strategy has been developed to prepare colorimetric and fluorogenic probes for the selective detection of mercury ions in water environments by performing a single-atom replacement within common fluorophores. These probes exhibit pronounced signal changes in the presence of mercury ions, with high selectivity, excellent sensitivity, and rapid responses, making them suitable for visualizing mercury in both aqueous and intracellular environments.

Discrimination between cancerous and normal cells/tissues enabled by a near-infrared fluorescent HClO probe

Linfang Wang et al.

Summary: The study developed a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent ROS probe PyOX, which demonstrated rapid and selective fluorescence turn-on response towards hypochlorous acid in cancer cells due to their higher ROS concentration. This probe has great potential for clinical application in distinguishing cancer from normal cells accurately and efficiently.

Autocatalytic deoximation reactions driven by visible light

Hongjia Li et al.

Summary: The photocatalytic oxidative deoximation reaction is an autocatalytic process catalyzed by the generated ketone products, which is metal-free and waste-free compared to reported methods. It is a significant transformation process in industrial production of fine chemicals, and the use of visible light as the driving force makes it more practical from an industrial viewpoint. Understanding the mechanism of the autocatalytic oxidative deoximation may help avoid the decomposition of oximes, significant starting materials and intermediates in the production of fine chemicals and medicines.
