Tailoring Crystal Facets of Metal-Organic Layers to Enhance Photocatalytic Activity for CO2 Reduction

Wei Yang et al.

Summary: Different crystal facets in metal and metal oxide nanocrystals often exhibit varied catalytic performances, whereas this phenomenon is rarely seen in metal-organic frameworks. A nickel metal-organic layer with rich (100) crystal facets demonstrates significantly higher photocatalytic CO2-to-CO activity compared to the one with rich (010) crystal facets and its bulky counterpart, due to synergistic catalysis on the surface enabling more favorable energetics in CO2 reduction.

Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Activity over NH2-MIL-125(Ti) by Facet Regulation

Xiao-Mei Cheng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the facet effect of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on photocatalytic processes by synthesizing NH2-MIL-125(Ti) with different ratios of {001} and {111} facets. It was found that increasing exposed proportion of {111} facets enhanced the activity in photoreduction of CO2. The {111} facets exhibited significantly higher photocatalytic activity and quantum yields compared to the {001} facets, with an important role in inhibiting electron-hole recombination.

Polypyrrole reinforced ZIF-67 with modulated facet exposure and billion-fold electrical conductivity enhancement towards robust photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Xuzhou Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, a polypyrrole-reinforced ZIF-67 composite was synthesized using an in situ monomer trapping strategy, leading to improved electrical conductivity and water stability. The composite showed significantly enhanced conductivity, improved chemical stability, and retained specific surface area and porosity compared to ZIF-67, making it an outstanding co-catalyst for robust photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Additionally, a PPy-mediated electron harvest and relay mechanism was proposed to rationalize the enhanced photocatalytic performance.
