Exceptional topology of non-Hermitian systems

Emil J. Bergholtz et al.

Summary: This review discusses the current understanding of the role of topology in non-Hermitian systems and its physical consequences in dissipative settings, focusing on the concept of exceptional degeneracies and its distinct phenomena, as well as the new notions of gapped phases in single-band systems. The unique sensitivity of non-Hermitian matrices to boundary conditions is highlighted, leading to anomalous relationships between bulk and boundary physics. Additionally, applications of non-Hermitian topology in classical and quantum systems are reviewed, showing its relevance beyond the field of topological phases.

Bulk-boundary-defect correspondence at disclinations in rotation-symmetric topological insulators and superconductors

Max Geier et al.

Summary: This study investigates the connection between ground-state topology and lattice topology through the presence of anomalous states at disclinations. The existence of anomalous disclination states in second-order topological phases is demonstrated using Volterra processes, while all contributions to (d - 2)-dimensional anomalous disclination states are identified from weak and first-order topological phases. The correspondence between bulk topology, boundary signatures, and disclination anomaly in different symmetry classes of topological insulators and superconductors in two and three dimensions is examined to determine uniqueness.

Topological Field Theory of Non-Hermitian Systems

Kohei Kawabata et al.

Summary: This paper develops a field-theoretical description of intrinsic non-Hermitian topological phases, formulated solely in terms of spatial degrees of freedom. The theory provides a universal understanding of non-Hermitian topological phenomena and systematically predicts new physics like transport phenomena and skin effects induced by a perpendicular spatial texture in two dimensions. The non-Hermitian skin effect is shown to be a signature of an anomaly from the field-theoretical perspective.

Geometric Response and Disclination-Induced Skin Effects in Non-Hermitian Systems

Xiao-Qi Sun et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of disclination-induced non-Hermitian skin effects in systems with fourfold rotation symmetry, leading to nontrivial one-dimensional point-gap topology along the direction of the disclination lines. The results can be described using field theory, enriching the topological field theory of non-Hermitian systems.

Skin effect and winding number in disordered non-Hermitian systems

Jahan Claes et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the non-Hermitian skin effect, extends the definition of the winding number to disordered NH systems, and verifies that the real-space formula can still predict the NH skin effect.

Dislocation non-Hermitian skin effect

Frank Schindler et al.

Summary: Crystal defects can serve as probes of intrinsic non-Hermitian topology, inducing a non-Hermitian skin effect in point-gapped systems. Two-dimensional systems may exhibit weak or strong non-Hermitian topology, related to Hatano-Nelson chains, and show a dislocation response.
