Cosmological perturbations in Palatini formalism

Mio Kubota et al.

Summary: This study investigates cosmological perturbations ofscalar-tensor theories in Palatini formalism. By introducing actions and computing perturbations in different frames, it is shown that the sound speed of gravitational waves is unity for certain models. Additionally, the presence of ghosts and potential deviations in sound speed in Palatini formalism are explored, with the conclusion that ghost-free terms can still serve as dark energy and inflaton.

Higgs inflation in Einstein-Cartan gravity

Mikhail Shaposhnikov et al.

Summary: The study focuses on inflation driven by the Higgs field in the Einstein-Cartan formulation of gravity, finding that inflation is possible and consistent with observations for a broad range of parameters. The results show that the spectral index is typically given by n(s) = 1-2/N-* and the tensor-to-scalar ratio r can vary between about 10(-10) and 1. This suggests the potential detection of gravitational waves from inflation in certain scenarios of Higgs inflation in the Einstein-Cartan framework.

Inflation with R(αβ) terms in the Palatini formulation

Jaakko Annala et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate inflation using the most general non-degenerate gravitational action, involving the symmetric part of the Ricci tensor coupled to a scalar field in the Palatini formulation of gravity. By employing field redefinitions, we manage to shift the impact of the Ricci terms from gravity to the scalar field, specifically focusing on slow-roll inflation. As exemplified by cases of actions quadratic and cubic in the Ricci tensor, we find that in the quadratic scenario, the tensor-to-scalar ratio r can be suppressed with no effect on the scalar spectrum, while in the cubic scenario, r can be suppressed by at most 2/9, with significant changes in the scalar spectral index n(s).

Dynamical aspects of asymmetric Eddington gravity with scalar fields

Hemza Azri et al.

Summary: In this study, two possible invariant actions formed by distinct combinations of independent Ricci tensors are proposed, showing that the generated metric must involve an additional antisymmetric part. The research indicates that the second curvature influences the dynamics of the connection and the evolution of scalar fields.

Scale-invariant quadratic gravity and inflation in the Palatini formalism

Ioannis D. Gialamas et al.

Summary: In the context of classical scale invariance, a quadratic gravity theory in the Palatini formalism is investigated for its inflationary predictions. The model, which involves two scalar fields coupling nonminimally to gravity, is found to comply with the latest constraints set by the Planck collaboration, and the quadratic in curvature terms reduce the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio.

Minimal k-inflation in light of the conformal metric-affine geometry

Yusuke Mikura et al.

Summary: By incorporating local conformal symmetry and broken global SO(1,1) symmetry in the metric-affine geometry, a minimal realization of slow-roll k-inflation is motivated. Predictions of this model, with n(s) around 0.96, r around 0.005, and c(s) around 0.03, are not only consistent with current observational data but also have potential for future testing.

Scalar-connection gravity and spontaneous scalarization

Hemza Azri et al.

Summary: Scalar-tensor theories of gravity allow significant deviations from general relativity through various astrophysical phenomena. In this paper, a scalar-connection gravity is formulated by setting up scalars and connection configurations instead of metric. The study explores gravitational equations with a perfect fluid source and a generated metric, showing deviations from general relativity in the strong field regime and distinguishing the framework from the famed scalar-tensor theories.
