Pansharpening PRISMA Data for Marine Plastic Litter Detection Using Plastic Indexes

Summary: This study uses satellite hyperspectral data for the first time to detect small marine plastic litter, demonstrating that PCA-based substitution can efficiently separate plastic spectra from water. Pansharpening techniques enhance the spatial resolution of the imagery, enabling the detection of plastic targets equivalent to 8% of the original pixel coverage. By evaluating 13 pansharpening methods, it is found that the spatial resolution of hyperspectral images can be improved effectively for detecting plastic objects.
