Redox control of magnetosome biomineralization

Yingjie Li

Summary: Magnetotactic bacteria can orientate in the Earth's magnetic field to search for their preferred microoxic environments through their unique organelles, the magnetosomes, containing nanometer-sized crystal particles of magnetic iron minerals synthesized in low-oxygen environments. Although the mechanism of aerobic repression for magnetosome biomineralization is not fully understood, studies have highlighted the importance of redox modulation for magnetosome formation.
