Airborne Emission Rate Measurements Validate Remote Sensing Observations and Emission Inventories of Western US Wildfires

Chelsea E. Stockwell et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel method is proposed to estimate carbon emissions from wildfire plumes using a combination of lidar remote sensing and in situ measurements. The results show strong agreement with traditional methods and also demonstrate a strong correlation between carbon monoxide emissions and TROPOMI predictions.

Inconsistencies in sulfur dioxide emissions from the Canadian oil sands and potential implications

Chris A. McLinden et al.

Summary: The study shows that there was a significant discrepancy in sulfur dioxide emissions from the Canadian oil sands before and after 2013, with no clear explanation currently available. The introduction of new flue-gas desulfurization units in 2013-2014 may have contributed to this disparity. The implications of the total sulfur deposition to downwind ecosystems and the impact of the differences between satellite and reported data on regional critical load exceedances are significant.

Daytime Oxidized Reactive Nitrogen Partitioning in Western US Wildfire Smoke Plumes

Julieta F. Juncosa Calahorrano et al.

Summary: The study analyzed samples of wildfire smoke in the Western United States and found that nitrogen oxides rapidly convert to more oxidized forms in the atmosphere, with peroxy acyl nitrates (PANs), particulate nitrate (pNO(3)), and gas-phase organic nitrates (Org N-(g)) being the dominant forms within 4 hours.

Emissions of Reactive Nitrogen From Western US Wildfires During Summer 2018

Jakob Lindaas et al.

Summary: Reactive nitrogen (N-r) in smoke plumes from wildfires in the western U.S. is mainly in reduced form, with rapid chemical transformations occurring after emission. The relationship between nitrogen compounds and modified combustion efficiency (MCE) is robust, showing that burn conditions and fuel characteristics contribute to the variability in the distribution of reduced and oxidized N-r. Comparisons with laboratory studies suggest that NHx emissions are similar or larger, while NOy emissions are smaller, than lab-based estimates.

Direct estimates of biomass burning NOx emissions and lifetimes using daily observations from TROPOMI

Xiaomeng Jin et al.

Summary: This study uses satellite remote sensing data and simulation models to derive NOx emission factors for wildfires of different fuel types globally. The research also found a decrease in NOx lifetime with decreasing fire emissions, which is likely attributed to an increase in both NOx abundance and hydroxyl radical production.

Where there is smoke there is mercury: Assessing boreal forest fire mercury emissions using aircraft and highlighting uncertainties associated with upscaling emissions estimates

David S. McLagan et al.

Summary: Emissions from biomass burning are an important source of mercury in the atmosphere, with gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations significantly correlated with co-emitted carbon species. Emission factors and estimates have uncertainties due to various assumptions used in the calculations, highlighting the complexity of estimating mercury emissions from biomass burning.

Wildfire-Induced CO Plume Observations From NAST-I During the FIREX-AQ Field Campaign

Daniel K. Zhou et al.

Summary: The FIREX-AQ field campaign aimed to investigate the impact of wildfire and biomass smoke on air quality and weather in the United States using ultraspectrally resolved infrared radiance measurements from aircraft and/or satellite observations. The study developed a methodology for retrieving tropospheric CO from such remotely sensed spectral data and evaluated CO emissions, plume evolution, and transport from fire ground site locations using NAST-I IR spectrometer observations, intercompared with in situ measurements from the NASA DC-8 aircraft and verified by the cloud physics lidar and MODIS airborne simulator on the NASA ER-2 aircraft.

Ground-based validation of the Copernicus Sentinel-5P TROPOMI NO2 measurements with the NDACC ZSL-DOAS, MAX-DOAS and Pandonia global networks

Tijl Verhoelst et al.

Summary: This study reports on the ground-based validation results of atmospheric NO2 data from the TROPOMI instrument onboard the ESA/EU Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite. The results show negative biases for tropospheric column data, slight negative median differences for stratospheric column data, and biases ranging from zero to -50% for total column data. The differences between S5P and correlative measurements are mainly random, with some biases attributed to representativeness differences and errors in the chemical transport model used in the S5P retrieval.

Atmospheric evolution of emissions from a boreal forest fire: the formation of highly functionalized oxygen-, nitrogen-, and sulfur-containing organic compounds

Jenna C. Ditto et al.

Summary: Forest fires are significant sources of reactive gas- and particle-phase organic compounds in the atmosphere, with complex CHONS compounds containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur being identified in the smoke plume. The formation and impacts of these compounds are not well understood, and their presence highlights potential chemical pathways in biomass burning emissions.
