Incorrect Asian aerosols affecting the attribution and projection of regional climate change in CMIP6 models

Zhili Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that CMIP6 models fail to accurately capture the observed trends of aerosol optical depth over Asia, mainly due to problematic anthropogenic aerosol emissions adopted by the models. Differences in simulated regional aerosol radiative forcing and temperature responses over Asia are evident when using different emissions inventories. Additionally, some widely adopted CMIP6 pathways underestimate the recent decline in anthropogenic aerosol emissions over China.

Summary: This study demonstrates how changes in the global distribution of anthropogenic aerosols influence the spatial patterns of North Atlantic sea-surface temperature. The North Atlantic sea-surface temperatures show different response patterns in different periods, largely influenced by anthropogenic aerosols.

Emergence of seasonal delay of tropical rainfall during 1979-2019

Fengfei Song et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that climate warming is causing a delay in tropical rainfall over land due to the increasing influence of greenhouse gases and anthropogenic aerosols. This delay, primarily driven by external forcings, is expected to further amplify in the future as greenhouse gases increase and aerosols decrease.

Zonal mean and shift modes of historical climate response to evolving aerosol distribution

Sarah M. Kang et al.

Summary: Through idealized experiments and Earth System Models, this study reveals the dynamic distinction between aerosol increase and aerosol-forced zonal shift modes in inducing climate change. The aerosol increase mode dominates in a motionless ocean model, while the zonal shift mode is amplified by interactive ocean dynamics. The evolving geographical distribution of aerosol emissions is crucial for understanding aerosol-forced historical climate change.

Anthropogenic aerosol forcing of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and the associated mechanisms in CMIP6 models

Taufiq Hassan et al.

Summary: The study on the impact of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) reveals a weakening trend in AMOC over the past few decades, possibly related to greenhouse gas emissions. Model simulations suggest that increased anthropogenic aerosols may be one of the reasons offsetting the effects of climate change.
