Real-time monitoring shows substantial excess all-cause mortality during second wave of COVID-19 in Europe, October to December 2020

Sarah K. Norgaard et al.

Summary: The EuroMOMO network monitors excess mortality in 27 European countries, with the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 resulting in high levels of excess mortality. Currently, there is a new surge in COVID-19 cases in Europe leading to substantial excess all-cause mortality observed by EuroMOMO.

Anthropogenic Infection of Cats during the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic

Margaret J. Hosie et al.

Summary: COVID-19 is a severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by a new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, which has high contagiousness and has led to a global pandemic. Cats are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially in households with close contact with humans.

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in respiratory samples from cats in the UK associated with human-to-cat transmission

Margaret J. Hosie et al.

Summary: The study found evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in UK cats, with infected cats developing mild or severe respiratory disease. High throughput sequencing of the viral genome revealed five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the infected cats compared to the nearest UK human SARS-CoV-2 sequence, which contained eight SNPs compared to the original Wuhan-Hu-1 reference sequence.

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in respiratory samples fromcats in the UK associated with human-to-cat transmission

Margaret J. Hosie et al.

Summary: The study provides evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in UK cats, with human-to-cat transmission occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic. Infected cats developed mild or severe respiratory diseases. Monitoring for potential human-to-cat, cat-to-cat, and cat-to-human transmission is important due to the ability of the virus to infect different species.
