The x-dependence of hadronic parton distributions: A review on the progress of lattice QCD

Martha Constantinou

Summary: This article reviews recent lattice calculations on the x-dependence of parton distributions, showing significant progress in calculating flavor-singlet parton distribution functions, generalized parton distributions, and transverse-momentum-dependent PDFs. These calculations provide valuable insights for phenomenological fits on experimental data sets.

Parton distributions and lattice-QCD calculations: Toward 3D structure

Martha Constantinou et al.

Summary: The theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) describes the strong force binding hadrons together. Parton distribution functions (PDFs) have been successful in describing collinear partons within hadrons, but new experiments are exploring the transverse structure using generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs). Different methods, including perturbative QCD factorization theorems and lattice-QCD calculations, are used to determine PDFs and generalize the understanding of hadron structure.

Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order Calculation of Quasiparton Distribution Functions

Long-Bin Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents NNLO calculation of quark quasiparton distribution functions and demonstrates the significant improvement in behavior of the extracted PDFs. With high precision lattice QCD simulations incorporating NNLO results, the study aims to test the QCD theory and obtain more precise results on nucleon PDFs for nucleon tomography at the planned electron-ion collider.

Extraction of Next-to-Next-to-Leading-Order Parton Distribution Functions from Lattice QCD Calculations

Zheng-Yang Li et al.

Summary: This study introduces complete next-to-next-to-leading-order coefficient functions to match flavor nonsinglct quark correlation functions in position space to parton distribution functions (PDFs), making predictions for valence-quark correlation functions. By performing Fourier transformation, matching coefficients for corresponding quasi-PDFs and pseudo-PDFs are obtained. The calculations can be generalized to evaluate matching coefficients for sea-quark and gluon correlation functions.

Constantia Alexandrou et al.

Summary: This study presents, for the first time, an ab initio calculation of the individual up, down, and strange quark helicity parton distribution functions for the proton, achieving unprecedented precision. The calculation was performed using lattice QCD techniques and nonperturbative renormalization of lattice matrix elements.

Neural-network analysis of Parton Distribution Functions from Ioffe-time pseudodistributions

Luigi Del Debbio et al.

Summary: This study extracts two nonsinglet nucleon Parton Distribution Functions from lattice QCD data for reduced Ioffe-time pseudodistributions. The analysis is performed within the NNPDF framework, considering data from different lattice ensembles and discussing in detail the treatment of systematics. A recipe for handling systematics is introduced and used for the extraction of light-cone PDFs.

Summary: The study derived a factorization expression for the transverse component of the axial-vector correlation function, accurate to one-loop. The results are presented in both position space as the factorization theorem for Ioffe-time distributions and in momentum space for the axial-vector quasi- and pseudodistributions.

Self-renormalization of quasi-light-front correlators on the lattice Lattice Parton Collaboration (LPC)

Yi-Kai Huo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the renormalization of large-momentum effective theory using different fermion formulations on the lattice, and proposes a strategy to address the issue of linear divergences. The results indicate that renormalization factors are universal in hadron state matrix elements, while physical matrix elements appear independent of the fermion formulation.

Large-momentum effective theory

Xiangdong Ji et al.

Summary: The large-momentum effective theory (LaMET) offers a new way to extract parton physics from proton properties through Lorentz symmetry. It provides an alternative to the standard formalism of partons by allowing for the extraction of various partonic observables through effective field theory matching and running. Future lattice QCD calculations could further enhance our understanding of hadronic structure and experimental data related to proton parton distribution.

Renormalon effects in quasiparton distributions

Wei-Yang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the renormalon ambiguity in the isovector unpolarized quasiparton distribution function (PDF) of a hadron is investigated. It is confirmed that the perturbative matching kernel between a quasi-PDF and a PDF shows good convergence based on three-loop bubble-chain diagram analyses. These results are encouraging for the quasi-PDF program, but further higher loop QCD calculations are needed for firm conclusions.

The continuum and leading twist limits of parton distribution functions in lattice QCD

Joseph Karpie et al.

Summary: In this study, continuum limit results for the unpolarized parton distribution function of the nucleon in lattice QCD are presented. The pseudo-PDF approach with Short Distance Factorization was utilized for the first time, and findings were compared with phenomenological determinations. The sGEVP technique was employed to optimize control over excited state contamination in calculations.

Summary: This paper presents theoretical details for calculating PDFs and LCDAs using a heavy-quark operator product expansion method, showing that the operator product expansion can be expressed as the convolution of a perturbative matching kernel and the corresponding light cone distribution. It also provides the one-loop Wilson coefficients for the PDFs and LCDAs, with the coefficients for the LCDAs being new.

Quark masses using twisted-mass fermion gauge ensembles

C. Alexandrou et al.

Summary: In this study, a calculation of the up, down, strange, and charm quark masses was conducted within the lattice QCD framework using twisted-mass fermion action. Scale setting with various quantities was used to check for finite lattice spacing effects, confirming compatible results in the continuum limit. Nonperturbative quark mass renormalization was performed using the RI'-MOM method, with determination of quark masses based on physical observables from the meson and baryon sectors.

Chiral perturbation for large momentum effective field theory

Wei-Yang Liu et al.

Summary: LaMET allows for direct extraction of parton distribution functions on a Euclidean lattice through a factorization theorem. By applying ChPT, soft scales can be separated to obtain extrapolation formulas for physical quark masses and infinite volume. Finite volume effects are reduced when the nucleon carries finite momentum, and the approach can be generalized to other parton observables in LaMET.
