A new ammonite from the Penarth Group, South Wales and the base of the Jurassic System in SW Britain

Peter Hodges

Summary: Two ammonites found in porcelaneous limestones at Lavernock Point in south Wales are considered to be from the Late Triassic age. These ammonites, named as Neophyllites lavernockensis sp. nov, are the earliest recorded in the UK. They are located above a major negative C-13 isotope anomaly, marking the top of the Triassic System, and below another negative C-13 isotope anomaly.

Do soft sediment deformations in the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic of the UK record seismic activity during the break-up of Pangea?

Marine Laborde-Casadaban et al.

Summary: The lagoonal and shallow marine sediments of the Penarth Group in the UK span the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, containing disturbed levels with soft sediment deformations (SSDs) related to earthquake activity. Factors such as fluids, faults, overpressure, and lithology guided the style of the SSDs. The directional data of SSDs suggest a series of earthquakes rather than a single mega-event triggered the observed features, in an active extensional tectonic context driven by the opening of Permo-Triassic basins in Western Europe.

Palaeoecological patterns of change in marine invertebrate faunas across the End-Triassic mass extinction event: Evidence from Larne, Northern Ireland

L. Felipe Opazo et al.

Summary: The study provides quantitative information on changes in different paleoecological parameters across the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, highlighting distinct states before, during, and after the End-Triassic mass extinction event. The findings are consistent with global studies and demonstrate the real ecological signals detected in this study.

Ammonites from the Lias Group (Lower Jurassic, Sinemurian and Pliensbachian) of White Park Bay, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland

Michael J. Simms et al.

Summary: The Jurassic succession in Northern Ireland has been under-studied, but recent research in White Park Bay and examination of museum material has revealed additional ammonite zones and subzones. Despite limited exposure, over 40 ammonite species have been collected, including two previously undescribed taxa.

Fossil echinoderms from the Triassic and Jurassic of Ireland

Michael J. Simms

Summary: An overview of fossil echinoderm taxa from the Jurassic and Triassic of Ireland is provided, with at least 12 species recorded, including significant new material. The crinoid Isocrinus angulatus is described based on articulated material, which was omitted from a previous monograph on Lower Jurassic crinoids.
