Low- and high-β lasers in the class-A limit: photon statistics, linewidth, and the laser-phase transition analogy

Naotomo Takemura et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of the spontaneous coupling coefficient beta on lasing properties in class-A limit is investigated, revealing that in this scenario all photon statistics are uniquely characterized by beta. The analogy of laser phase transition becomes transparent in the class-A limit.

Summary: Traditional spontaneous symmetry breaking cannot explain second-order phase transitions occurring in out-of-equilibrium open quantum systems, as we demonstrate that symmetry breaking is not a necessary condition for these transitions.

Squeezed Lasing

Carlos Sanchez Munoz et al.

Summary: The concept of a squeezed laser is introduced, where a squeezed cavity mode develops a macroscopic photonic occupation due to stimulated emission. This proposal, implementable in optical setups, relies on parametric driving of the cavity and excitation by a broadband squeezed vacuum to achieve lasing behavior in a squeezed cavity mode. The squeezed laser can find applications beyond standard lasers, such as direct application in Michelson interferometry beyond the standard quantum limit, or its use in atomic metrology.

Coherent and dissipative dynamics at quantum phase transitions

Davide Rossini et al.

Summary: This review discusses the many-body physics at quantum phase transitions, covering both equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium behaviors as well as effects of dissipative interactions. Different types of transitions exhibit distinct scaling behaviors, with the peculiar feature of extreme sensitivity to boundary conditions at first-order quantum transitions.

Atom-only theories for U(1) symmetric cavity-QED models

Roberta Palacino et al.

Summary: The study examines a generalized Dicke model with U(1) symmetry, showing how effective theories must vary for models with continuous symmetry. It provides a template for developing effective theories of more complex models. The research highlights the importance of including higher-order corrections in describing the transition to a superradiant state in this model.

Distinctive class of dissipation-induced phase transitions and their universal characteristics

Matteo Soriente et al.

Summary: Coupling a system to a nonthermal environment can lead to dissipation-induced phase transitions, where the environment overwhelms the system's symmetry-breaking tendencies and creates new phase-stability regions. Excitations differ through changes in their symplectic norm, resulting in the emergence of exceptional pointlike scenarios.

Critical theory for the breakdown of photon blockade

Jonathan B. Curtis et al.

Summary: Photon blockade is a phenomenon where strong photon-photon repulsion prevents a quantum optical system from absorbing multiple photons, occurring in a single atom coupled to a light field described by the Jaynes-Cummings model. The breakdown of photon blockade is associated with the spontaneous breaking of an antiunitary PT symmetry, with properties captured by a simple biased diffusion toy model. Approaching the critical point, the width of the steady-state distribution in Fock space diverges as a power law, allowing for the calculation of critical scaling of steady-state observables without mean-field theory.
