Type VII Toxin/Antitoxin Classification System for Antitoxins that Enzymatically Neutralize Toxins

Xiaoxue Wang et al.

Summary: This study identified three new TA systems where the antitoxin is an enzyme that chemically modifies the toxin to neutralize its activity. The suggestion to introduce the type VII TA system will help classify enzyme-antitoxin reaction-based TA systems.

Structural and functional analysis of the Klebsiella pneumoniae MazEF toxin-antitoxin system

Chenglong Jin et al.

Summary: The crystal structure of the type II TA complex of Klebsiella pneumoniae MazEF was presented for the first time, showing its assembly and interaction modes in solution. MazF toxin in K. pneumoniae has unique features and ribonuclease activity, with potential substrate recognition sites in specific loops. Mutation experiments confirmed critical residues for MazF activity, contributing to the understanding of the bacterial TA system and development of antimicrobial agents against drug-resistant strains.

Characterization of DinJ-YafQ toxin-antitoxin module in Tetragenococcus halophilus: activity, interplay, and evolution

Xiaotong Luo et al.

Summary: A TA module named DinJ-YafQ(tha) was identified in Tetragenococcus halophilus, where YafQ(1)(tha) acts as a toxin protein and DinJ(1)(tha) serves as an antitoxin, forming a complex to regulate stress response and plasmid maintenance during fermentation. Further investigation into this module may shed light on the key roles of TA systems in T. halophilus and provide a foundation for future research.

Genome Sequencing of five Lacticaseibacillus Strains and Analysis of Type I and II Toxin-Antitoxin System Distribution

Alessia Levante et al.

Summary: Analyzing the genomes of Lacticaseibacillus strains from dairy origin revealed a high number of TA systems spread across all analyzed strains, with type I TA systems mainly located on plasmid DNA. The study also highlighted the diversity of encoded toxins and antitoxins in the type II TA systems found in these strains. This research opens up future avenues for using genomic data to study the distribution and prevalence of TA systems in industrially relevant microorganisms.
