Rheological behavior of commercial artificial tear solutions

Steve Arshinoff et al.

Summary: The study investigated the rheological behavior of 20 commercially available artificial tear solutions at 25°C, categorizing them into 3 groups based on their Newtonian or non-Newtonian behaviors. Solutions with non-Newtonian behavior may offer better comfort and longer-lasting symptomatic relief for dry-eye disease, but further clinical experiments are needed to confirm their direct correlation with prolonged relief.

Role of rheology in tears and artificial tears

Steve A. Arshinoff et al.

Summary: The study of viscoelastic fluids as artificial tears has evolved since the late 1970s. Healon, the first approved ophthalmic viscosurgical device, demonstrates interesting shear-thinning properties that have proven beneficial in both ophthalmic surgery and tear replacement solutions. Viscoelastic solutions based on hyaluronan show promising rheological properties that can potentially enhance efficacy when further studied and developed for better artificial tears.

2D numerical simulation of tear film dynamics: Effects of shear-thinning properties

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of shear-thinning properties on tear dynamics through 2D numerical simulations, showing that appropriate shear-thinning parameter values can delay tear film rupture risk and provide effective lubrication.

A bioinspired synthetic soft hydrogel for the treatment of dry eye

Yu Yu et al.

Summary: By chemically crosslinking high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, a synthetic soft hydrogel similar to natural soft hydrogels was created for use as an ocular surface lubricant with therapeutic effects for dry eye. The soft hydrogel demonstrated biocompatibility in animal experiments and canine clinical studies, showing improvement in ocular symptoms when combined with cyclosporine treatment for dog patients previously unresponsive to cyclosporine.
