Urca Cooling in Neutron Star Crusts and Oceans: Effects of Nuclear Excitations

Long-Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of nuclear excitations on Urca cooling in the crust and ocean of neutron stars, providing an expression for Urca process neutrino luminosity and calculating the neutrino luminosities of candidate Urca cooling pairs with state-of-the-art nuclear structure inputs. The results show that nuclear excitations can significantly enhance total Urca neutrino luminosities in the accreted neutron star crust, potentially causing significant observational effects.

Sensitivity of Neutron-Rich Nuclear Isomer Behavior to Uncertainties in Direct Transitions

G. Wendell Misch et al.

Summary: Nuclear isomers are excited in the rapid neutron capture process of nucleosynthesis, forming astromers. Astromers react and decay at different rates, requiring separate treatment in simulations. Transition rates and thermalization temperatures are determined by direct transitions, and unknown transitions impact astromer behavior.

New 59Fe Stellar Decay Rate with Implications for the 60Fe Radioactivity in Massive Stars

B. Gao et al.

Summary: This study resolves the discrepancy between observations and calculations regarding the Fe-60/Al-26 gamma-ray flux ratio, by measuring the stellar beta-decay rate of Fe-59. It eliminates a major nuclear uncertainty in predicting the yield of Fe-60 and reduces the existing discrepancy in the Fe-60/Al-26 ratio.

Electron capture in stars

K. Langanke et al.

Summary: Electron capture on nuclei is crucial in the dynamics of astrophysical objects, with capture rates derived from perturbation theory. Recent progress in experimental techniques and nuclear models has greatly improved our understanding of stellar electron capture rates and their impact on various astrophysical phenomena.
