This study evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria in a military hospital in Alkharj, finding that Gram-negative bacteria were more prevalent. High levels of resistance were observed in Acinetobacter baumannii and several other bacteria, presenting challenges for hospital antibiotic policies. Surveillance of causative organisms and their antibiotic susceptibility remains crucial in overcoming treatment failures.
This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial susceptibility of Gram-negative and Gram positive bacteria at a military hospital in Alkharj. This retrospective study was conducted at a military hospital in Alkharj. Data included prevalence of Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria and bacterial sensitivity to different antibiotics. Bacterial culture results were obtained from the microbiology department of the hospi-tal. Gram negative bacteria (67.56%) were isolated more frequently than Gram positive bacteria. The most frequently isolated bacteria were Escherichia coli (30.19%) and Staphylococcus aureus (26.49%). Acine-tobacter baumannii was highly resistant to all antibiotics except aztreonam (38%). Enterobacter cloacae, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria were highly resistant to at least 3 antibiotics from 3 different groups. Continuous evolution of bacterial Infectious diseases in hospital environments necessitates continuous surveillance of causative organisms and their antibiotic-susceptibility pattern in order to overcome the failure of the treatment and to help in formulating hospital antibiotic policies.
