Doping evolution of the Mott-Hubbard landscape in infinite-layer nickelates

Berit H. Goodge et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of superconductivity in Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 has led to questions about the underlying electronic structure hierarchy. By using locally resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy, the Mott-Hubbard character of Nd1-xSrxNiO2 was directly probed, revealing evidence of a multiband electronic structure in the superconducting infinite-layer nickelates.

Electronic Structure Trends Across the Rare-Earth Series in Superconducting Infinite-Layer Nickelates

Emily Been et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 with rare-earth R spanning across the lanthanide series, providing a new knob for tuning nickelate superconductivity. The study shows that there are significant changes in lattice constants, bandwidth, magnetic exchange, and compensation effects across the lanthanides, suggesting their potential impact on superconductivity.

Magnetic excitations in infinite-layer nickelates

H. Lu et al.

Summary: The discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates brings us closer to a material class similar to cuprate superconductors. Measurements of magnetic excitations in these nickelates showed that undoped NdNiO2 possesses a branch of dispersive excitations with a bandwidth of approximately 200 milli-electron volts.

Strongly correlated doped hole carriers in the superconducting nickelates: Their location, local many-body state, and low-energy effective Hamiltonian

Zi-Jian Lang et al.

Summary: By studying the hole carriers in the new member of high-temperature superconductors, Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2, it was found that the holes mainly reside in oxygen, similar to the cuprates. This unexpected result suggests a possible route to increase superconducting temperature and a quantum phase transition absent in cuprates.

Exchange interactions and sensitivity of the Ni two-hole spin state to Hund's coupling in doped NdNiO2

Xiangang Wan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the magnetic exchange interactions of the superconductor Nd1-xSrxNiO2 using the density-functional-based LDA+U method and linear-response theory. It was found that hole doping significantly enhances the interlayer exchange coupling, while the Nd-5d states do not affect the magnetic exchange interactions and may not participate in the superconductivity of this compound. The analysis using dynamical mean field theory revealed an underlying Mott insulating state that leads to different quasiparticle band structures upon doping.

Doping dependence of electronic structure of infinite-layer NdNiO2

Zhao Liu et al.

Summary: The electronic structure of the nickelate superconductor NdNiO2 is studied upon hole doping, revealing strong intrinsic hybridization between strongly correlated states and itinerant electrons, forming a valence-fluctuating correlated metal. Hund's rule plays a dominant role in the lightly doped compound, with intricate effects on Ni-3d orbitals. Hole doping leads to nonmonotonic changes in electron occupation and flipping orbital configurations in the overdoped regime. These findings provide insights into electron pairing and superconductivity.
