In situ observation with x-ray for tentative exploration of laser beam welding processes for aluminum-based alloys

Stephan Boerner et al.

Summary: In recent years, laser processes have seen increasing market share in component manufacturing, with high frequency beam oscillation showing potential in laser welding and cutting. However, the lack of understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms remains a major obstacle to its widespread application, emphasizing the importance of further research for process optimization.

Synchrotron X-ray Analysis of the Influence of the Magnesium Content on the Absorptance during Full-Penetration Laser Welding of Aluminum

Jonas Wagner et al.

Summary: Full-penetration laser beam welding is a welding method where the depth of the weld seam equals the material thickness. The magnesium content in high-strength aluminum alloys influences the geometry and absorptance of the capillary. Research captured this influence through X-ray imaging and provides information for new optimization approaches.

Image processing based detection of the fibre orientation during depth-controlled laser ablation of CFRP monitored by optical coherence tomography

Daniel Holder et al.

Summary: A novel laser-based and controlled approach for automated and layer-accurate removal of damaged areas in carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts has been presented. In-line depth measurements by optical coherence tomography during nanosecond laser ablation enable depth-controlled homogeneous material removal with minimum damage and low surface roughness. Image processing-based determination of the fiber orientation allows for reliable online detection of the processed layer, demonstrating the effectiveness of the automated laser-based approach.

The causal relationship between melt pool geometry and energy absorption measured in real time during laser-based manufacturing

Brian J. Simonds et al.

Summary: This study investigates laser absorption during laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing by monitoring laser backscattered intensity and X-ray imaging. Laser absorption strongly reflects the stability of the vapor depression, oxygen content, and presence of powder, and may lead to reduced absorption and porosity during scanning. The findings suggest the potential of using a total backscattered light detection system for real-time process control.
