Association between ambient temperature and heat waves with mortality in South Asia: Systematic review and meta-analysis

Asya Dimitrova et al.

Summary: Studies on the direct relationship between ambient temperature, heat waves, and all-cause mortality in South Asia found that both high and low temperatures are associated with increased mortality, with a statistically significant association only at higher temperatures. Factors affecting mortality rates include cause of death, age, sex, location, level of education, and socioeconomic status, but the evidence is limited and inconsistent due to the small number of studies.

Research priorities for control of zoonoses in South Africa

Greg Simpson et al.

Summary: The 'One Health' study in South Africa identified 17 priority zoonotic diseases, with rabies, TB, brucellosis, Rift Valley fever, and cysticercosis being the top five. The research priorities mainly focus on basic epidemiological research and development of new interventions, with the highest priority being improving existing interventions followed by health policy and systems research. Future research should aim to improve understanding of zoonotic burden, risk factors, and new interventions in public health, with a focus on vulnerable populations such as those with limited rural services and high-risk occupations.
