Global Groundwater Modeling and Monitoring: Opportunities and Challenges

Laura E. Condon et al.

Summary: Groundwater, as the largest unfrozen freshwater resource on Earth, has been historically excluded from global models. Efforts have been made to develop global scale groundwater modeling, but there are still key technological and data challenges that need to be addressed to achieve a consistent global groundwater framework.

On doing hydrology with dragons: Realizing the value of perceptual models and knowledge accumulation

Thorsten Wagener et al.

Summary: Our understanding of the terrestrial hydrologic cycle is limited and there are still many unknown areas to explore. We need to identify where our extrapolation ability is strong and where it is weak; where available data sets are informative and where they are poor approximations. We lack an effective strategy for knowledge accumulation in hydrology as a community, and insufficiently focus on highlighting knowledge gaps where they exist.
