Mechanical properties of tungsten: Recent research on modified tungsten materials in Japan

Shuhei Nogami et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the drawbacks of tungsten as a plasma facing material in fusion reactors and the efforts to improve its mechanical properties through collaborative research and development. Methods such as grain refining, K-doping, dispersion strengthening, and alloying with Re are explored to enhance the performance of tungsten materials. However, there are concerns regarding the intrinsic issues of materials alloyed with Re under high dose neutron irradiation.

Neutron irradiation hardening across ITER diverter tungsten armor

D. Terentyev et al.

Summary: In this study, neutron irradiation and subsequent hardness measurements were performed on tungsten grades at temperatures reaching up to 1200 degrees C. The results showed that even at one third of the melting point, neutron exposure can increase hardness by 40% to 70%, depending on the grade. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that the hardening at 1200 degrees C is mainly attributed to the presence of dislocation loops and a high density of voids.

Plastic deformation of ITER specification tungsten: Temperature and strain rate dependent constitutive law deduced by inverse finite element analysis

Aleksandr Zinovev et al.

Summary: In this study, a constitutive law describing the elasto-plastic response of tungsten was derived using inverse finite element analysis (IFEA) to understand deformation beyond the onset of instability in tensile tests. A model based on thermally-activated dislocation-mediated plasticity was applied to accurately characterize the mechanical response of tungsten compliant with ITER specifications, demonstrating the ability to extrapolate the hardening law to a wider temperature and strain rate range. One advantage of this method is its applicability to neutron irradiated materials with low uniform elongation.

Fracture-mechanical properties of neutron irradiated ITER specification tungsten

Summary: This study investigates the influence of neutron irradiation on the fracture mechanical properties of ITER specification-conform tungsten materials, revealing severe material embrittlement at 800 degrees C. The transition temperature shift induced by the irradiation is evaluated to be 600-625 degrees C.
