Transitional justice and the political 'work' of domestic tourism

Duncan Light et al.

Summary: This paper explores the relationship between domestic tourism and citizens' engagement with transitional justice projects through a study on domestic tourists visiting a memorial museum in Romania. The findings show that many visitors, beyond sightseeing, participate in acts of memory-work, acknowledge victims of repression, and recognize the core message of transitional justice. This indicates that domestic tourism is a meaningful yet overlooked context for citizens to engage with broader transitional justice projects.
