Time Capsule: Nostalgia Shields Psychological Wellbeing From Limited Time Horizons

Erica G. Hepper et al.

Summary: Nostalgia is a self-relevant and social emotion that arises from fond autobiographical memories, which can help maintain psychological wellbeing in the face of limited time horizons. Studies show that individuals with higher nostalgia proneness tend to have higher psychological wellbeing as they age, and nostalgia can buffer perceptions of limited time, thus facilitating wellbeing across the adult lifespan.

Inducing positive affect and positive future expectations using the best-possible-self intervention: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Johannes Bodo Heekerens et al.

Summary: The best-possible-self intervention can effectively increase positive affect and optimism, but the effects are not significant. Results from randomized controlled trials suggest that immediate measurement of momentary affect yields the strongest results, while the key to the effects on optimism lies in conceptualizing it as positive future expectations.
