Spatial distribution, multivariate statistical analysis, and health risk assessment of some parameters controlling drinking water quality at selected primary schools located in the southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh

Tapos Kormoker et al.

Summary: The southwestern coastal areas of Bangladesh are facing a severe shortage of safe drinking water due to various factors, resulting in health hazards, especially for children. A study on the physiochemical and bacteriological parameters of drinking water from tube wells at primary schools was conducted in Kalapara upazila, Patuakhali district, Bangladesh. The results showed that some parameters, such as iron, exceeded the recommended levels, while others met the national standards. The bacteriological analysis revealed that a significant percentage of tube wells delivered water without fecal coliforms, but some had the potential to pose health risks for children from arsenic contamination. Carcinogenic risks were found to be present in some tube wells, indicating the potential for lifetime cancer risks for children.

Contamination and human health risk assessment of heavy metals in soil of a municipal solid waste dumpsite in Khamees-Mushait, Saudi Arabia

Ismat H. Ali et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of heavy metal contamination from a municipal solid waste dumpsite on surface and deep soils as well as leaves of native plants in a Saudi city. The results showed different levels of metal uptake by plants and insignificant variation between heavy metal concentrations in surface and deep soil samples. The distribution of heavy metal pollution in the region was found to be heterogeneous, with higher pollution levels in the northwest based on the pollution index and GIS mapping.

Bioaccumulation and health risk assessment of toxic metals in red algae in Sudanese Red Sea coast

Abuagla Y. A. Ali et al.

Summary: This study reports the bioaccumulation levels of toxic metals by five red algae species at the Sudanese coastal line, suggesting different affinities for each metal and correlations between certain metal combinations. Jania and Hypnea were found to have similar metal accumulation behavior, with overall hazard index values indicating no non-cancer risk from algae consumption.

Selenium transport and metabolism in plants: Phytoremediation and biofortification implications

Richard C. Trippe et al.

Summary: This review synthesizes current knowledge on selenium transport and metabolism in plants, emphasizing the importance of selenium for biofortification and phytoremediation. Plant uptake and translocation of selenium are largely achieved through sulfur transport proteins, with selenium metabolism closely following the sulfur metabolic pathway. Unique aspects of selenium transport and metabolism in selenium hyperaccumulators are also discussed, highlighting their potential applications for biofortification and phytoremediation.
