Cavitation controls droplet sizes in elastic media

Estefania Vidal-Henriquez et al.

Summary: The study presents a theoretical description of droplets growing in an elastic matrix, revealing that large droplets only form when cavitation occurs, stabilizing the size and position of smaller droplets and increasing in density with faster cooling. The model also indicates how adjusting cooling protocols and nucleation site density affects droplet size distribution.

Effect of mesoscale phase contrast on fatigue-delaying behavior of self-healing hydrogels

Xueyu Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the fatigue resistance of chemically cross-linked polyampholyte hydrogels with a hierarchical structure was investigated. It was found that the structure details characterized by SAXS control the mechanisms of crack propagation, with gels exhibiting strong phase contrast and low cross-linking levels showing higher fatigue resistance. The mesoscale structure plays a detailed role in providing design principles for developing self-healing, tough, and fatigue-resistant soft materials.

Evolution of single gyroid photonic crystals in bird feathers

Vinodkumar Saranathan et al.

Summary: Vivid structural colors are important in animals, with invertebrates having diverse three-dimensional photonic nanostructures in their exoskeletons. Bird feathers also possess photonic nanostructures, with blue-winged leafbirds having unique photonic crystal networks in their barbs. These avian photonic crystals could provide inspiration for multifunctional applications, offering efficient routes to single gyroid synthesis at optical length scales.

Recent Advances in Block Copolymer Self-Assembly for the Fabrication of Photonic Films and Pigments

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: The review discusses the self-assembly of BCPs as photonic pigments, focusing on the role of confinement in forming well-ordered lamellae and contrasting with disordered structures from densely packed micelles. The structural characteristics and optical performance of 1D photonic crystals and photonic glasses are critically compared, along with the current challenges and potential for future developments in this field.

Evolution of Polymer Colloid Structure During Precipitation and Phase Separation

Jason X. Liu et al.

Summary: Polymer colloids appear in a variety of contexts and understanding the mechanism of structure formation in polymer colloids is crucial to their function and application. The specific pathway from precipitation to vitrification dictates the resulting morphology of colloids fabricated from polymer blends. The understanding of these pathways is critical to designing functional structured polymer colloids.

Structural color from solid-state polymerization-induced phase separation

Alba Sicher et al.

Summary: Structural colors are produced by wavelength-dependent scattering of light from nanostructures. Solid-state polymerization-induced phase separation can produce stable structures at optical length scales, resulting in polymeric composites with a blue or white appearance. The flexibility of this approach is demonstrated by producing structural color in filaments and large sheets.

Surface tensiometry of phase separated protein and polymer droplets by the sessile drop method

Mahdiye Ijavi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a classic method that can be effectively scaled down to measure the surface tension of liquid droplets based on droplet shape and density differences. The connection between droplet shape and surface tension relies on the density difference, which can be determined with the measurement of droplet sedimentation velocity in the same setup.
