Repair of critical-size porcine craniofacial bone defects using a collagen-polycaprolactone composite biomaterial

Marley J. Dewey et al.

Summary: While there were no differences in overall healing response between the mineralized collagen-PCL composites and the PCL mesh in a critical-sized porcine ramus defect model, data showed variability in metrics of healing, with some implants surrounded by abscesses and PCL polymer still present after 9-10 months. Some implants demonstrated substantial levels of bone regeneration, suggesting targeted improvements are necessary for repair of large animal models to better represent CMF bone healing. Strategies for enhancing osteogenesis, modulating the immune system, and improving scaffold properties may be beneficial for successful bone regeneration.

Decellularized nerve matrix hydrogel scaffolds with longitudinally oriented and size-tunable microchannels for peripheral nerve regeneration

Zilong Rao et al.

Summary: The structure of biomaterials is crucial for tissue regeneration, and mimicking the ultrastructure of native tissue can provide topological guidance. Introducing axially aligned microchannels can effectively promote neurite extension and Schwann cell migration, showing potential for peripheral nerve regeneration.

Overview of current adipose-derived stem cell (ADSCs) processing involved in therapeutic advancements: flow chart and regulation updates before and after COVID-19

Loubna Mazini et al.

Summary: Adipose-derived stem cells have low immunogenicity and various self-renewal abilities, can differentiate into different tissue-specific progenitors, migrate into damaged sites, and act through autocrine and paracrine pathways. However, the lack of standardization protocols and discrepancies in cell outcomes and engraftment pose limitations on their widespread use.

Bioinspired mineralized collagen scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

Zhengwei Li et al.

Summary: This article thoroughly summarizes the state of the art of mineralized collagen scaffolds (MCSs) as tissue-engineered scaffolds for bone repair, including fabrication methods, critical factors for osteogenesis regulation, and opportunities and challenges for the future. The review discusses current fabrication methods for MCSs to improve their biomimetic physical structures, as well as the physical, biological, and chemical cues as critical factors for regulating the osteogenic feature of MCSs. Opportunities and challenges associated with MCSs as bone tissue-engineered scaffolds are also discussed to point out future directions for building the next generation of MCSs with satisfactorily mimetic structures and appropriate biological characters for bone regeneration.
