Direct observation of two-dimensional magnons in atomically thin CrI3

John Cenker et al.

Summary: In this study, two-dimensional magnons were directly observed in atomically thin CrI3 using magneto-Raman spectroscopy, revealing optical selection rules and magnetic properties. The phonon magnon mode in monolayers exhibited strict selection rules, while the optical magnon modes in bilayers and bulk materials were influenced by layer index. Additionally, two degenerate optical magnon modes with opposite angular momentum and conjugate optical selection rules were resolved in layered antiferromagnetic states.

Symmetry-dependent field-free switching of perpendicular magnetization

Liang Liu et al.

Summary: An out-of-plane spin-orbit torque (SOT) has been observed in an HM/FM bilayer of CuPt/CoPt, referred to as 3m torque, allowing for field-free switching of perpendicular magnetization of the CoPt layer. The 3m torque depends strongly on the relative orientation of current flow and crystal symmetry, and shows good endurance in cycling experiments. Experiments with various SOT bilayers featuring low-symmetry point groups at the interface may reveal further unconventional spin torques in the future.

Linear scaling quantum transport methodologies

Zheyong Fan et al.

Summary: In recent years, predictive computational modeling has become crucial in studying fundamental electronic, optical, and thermal properties in complex condensed matter. Linear scaling numerical methods have been developed to simulate quantum transport in realistic models, and have been used extensively to explore quantum transport phenomena in disordered media. The review also addresses the trade-off between computational cost and accuracy of different numerical schemes, and demonstrates the usefulness of these methods through examples in the study of transport in disordered materials.

Neel-type skyrmions and their current-induced motion in van derWaals ferromagnet-based heterostructures

Tae-Eon Park et al.

Summary: We report the experimental observation of Neel-type chiral magnetic skyrmions and their lattice (SkX) formation in a vdW ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2 (FGT). By using first principle calculations supported by experiments, we discover the origin of DMI being the interfaces with oxides, which then allows us to engineer vdW heterostructures for desired chiral states. Our finding opens the door to topological spin textures in the 2D vdW magnet and their potential device application.

Emerging intrinsic magnetism in two-dimensional materials: theory and applications

Songrui Wei et al.

Summary: The intrinsic magnetism of a range of 2D materials has been experimentally verified, with ferromagnetic orders mostly induced by super exchange interaction and anisotropy deriving from strong spin-orbit coupling of heavy atoms. The relationship between anisotropy and stable spontaneous magnetization is discussed based on spin wave theory and Mermin-Wagner theorem. These materials have potential applications in spintronics, transport property, magnetocaloric effect, magneto-optic effect, catalyst in water-splitting and electrode of supercapacitor.
