Reconfiguring confined magnetic colloids with tunable fluid transport behavior

Zhizhi Sheng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates how collective dynamics of confined magnetic colloids can be finely tuned by external magnetic fields, and reveals that the collective configuration characterized by the colloidal entropy is controlled by factors such as colloidal concentration, confining ratio, and external field strength and direction. Manipulating the entropy of the colloidal suspension can control the mechanical properties of the colloidal suspension and the transport of the solvent in microfluidic devices.

Laser-based temperature control to study the roles of entropy and enthalpy in polymer-nanopore interactions

Christopher E. Angevine et al.

Summary: Single-molecule approaches are crucial for studying the free energy of confinement for polymers in a nanopore environment. We developed a laser-based nanopore heating approach to monitor the free energy profiles of polyethylene glycol and water-soluble peptides interacting with the nanopore sensor. Our observations suggest different mechanisms and contributions of entropy and enthalpy in this modified environment, providing a benchmark for optimizing single-molecule nanopore sensors.

Design of Porous Membranes by Liquid Gating Technology

Shuli Wang et al.

Summary: Porous membranes play crucial roles in various fields but are prone to membrane fouling. Liquid gating technology addresses these challenges by utilizing functional liquid to fill and seal pores, enabling superior performance in multiphase transportation, antifouling, and energy-saving. This technological advancement opens up new possibilities for the application of porous membranes.
