Degradation of Organic Contaminants in the Fe(II)/Peroxymonosulfate Process under Acidic Conditions: The Overlooked Rapid Oxidation Stage

Hongyu Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the kinetics and mechanisms of organic contaminants degradation in the iron(II)-activated peroxymonosulfate process under acidic conditions. It found that organic contaminants were rapidly oxidized in the rapid oxidation stage with different oxidants contributing to degradation, while in the slow oxidation stage, degradation was slower and less oxidants were generated.

Activate Fe3S4 Nanorods by Ni Doping for Efficient Dye-Sensitized Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents a facile method to synthesize uniform Fe3S4 nanorods with enhanced HER activity through Ni doping. Sensitized by a commercial organic dye, the 1%Ni-doped Fe3S4 nanorods exhibit significantly higher H-2 production rate and apparent quantum yield compared to pristine Fe3S4 and even 1% Pt-deposited Fe3S4. The working mechanism of this dye-sensitized system and the effect of Ni-doping concentration have been explored.

Chloride-Mediated Enhancement in Heat-Induced Activation of Peroxymonosulfate: New Reaction Pathways for Oxidizing Radical Production

Yong-Yoon Ahn et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant acceleration of organic oxidation by Cl- using thermally activated PMS under acidic conditions. It also shows that HOCl plays a key role in the oxidation process, and chlorine atoms formed via one-electron oxidation of Cl- are the primary oxidants involved. Additionally, the study found that PMS outperformed PDS in degrading benzoic acid during thermal activation, contrary to established beliefs.

New insight into increased toxicity during ozonation of chlorophenol: The significant contribution of oxidizing intermediates

Jianjian Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that during the ozonation of 3-chlorophenol, acute toxicity significantly increased and then gradually decreased. At the toxicity peaks, oxidizing intermediates posed acute toxicity equal to 65.8%-963% of the whole toxicity, with free active chlorine (FAC) contributing 21.4%-51.6%, and its concentrations significantly correlated to the acute toxicity change.

Carbon aerogel from forestry biomass as a peroxymonosulfate activator for organic contaminants degradation

Mingshuo Zhu et al.

Summary: The study synthesized biomass carbon aerogel (CA) derived from poplar powder, which exhibited excellent degradation performance for different types of organic contaminants. The possible mechanism for PMS activation was discussed, indicating that singlet oxygen (1O2) dominated the non-radical pathway for pollutant removal. The study also confirmed that the ketonic/carbonyl groups on the surface of CA could serve as a possible active site to facilitate the generation of 1O2.
