Gut Microbiome and Common Variable Immunodeficiency: Few Certainties and Many Outstanding Questions

Gilda Varricchi et al.

Summary: CVID is the most common symptomatic primary antibody immunodeficiency, usually inherited polygenically and affecting immune function in the gastrointestinal tract and lungs. Research on the gut microbiota of CVID patients is limited, but suggests reduced diversity and increased levels of lipopolysaccharide and immune cell activation markers. The molecular pathways linking gut microbiota to systemic inflammation and tumorigenesis in CVID patients are still poorly understood.
