Atmospheric measurements at Mt. Tai - Part I: HONO formation and its role in the oxidizing capacity of the upper boundary layer

Chaoyang Xue et al.

Summary: A comprehensive field campaign was conducted at Mt. Tai in China to measure HONO and related parameters. The study found high levels of HONO at the summit of the mountain, with a diurnal noontime peak. The kinetics of aerosol-derived HONO sources were analyzed, and evidence of air mass transport from ground to summit level was provided. The study also quantified the formation of HONO from different paths and its role in radical production.

Laboratory Investigation of Renoxification from the Photolysis of Inorganic Particulate Nitrate

Qianwen Shi et al.

Summary: Recent laboratory studies have shown that under atmospheric conditions, suspended submicron particulate nitrate releases NOx and HONO at a slower rate, indicating a limited role in renoxification. This suggests that inorganic particulate nitrate may not significantly contribute to the NOx and OH budgets in remote environments. Future studies should investigate more complex aerosol mixtures to further understand the photolysis of ambient aerosols.

Superoxide and Nitrous Acid Production from Nitrate Photolysis Is Enhanced by Dissolved Aliphatic Organic Matter

Xinke Wang et al.

Summary: The enhancement of HONO(g) emissions from NO3(aq) photolysis is partially caused by changes in secondary nitrate anion photochemistry due to dissolved aliphatic organic matter (DAOM). Superoxide radical (O-2(-)) produced through DAOM oxidation by OH(aq) reacts with NO(aq) and NO2(aq) to form peroxynitrate (OONO2-) and peroxynitrite (OONO-), leading to an overall increase in nitrite (NO2-) precursors and enhanced HONO(g) emissions. This indicates an underappreciated role of O-2((aq)) in aqueous aerosol chemistry.

Evidence for Strong HONO Emission from Fertilized Agricultural Fields and its Remarkable Impact on Regional O3 Pollution in the Summer North China Plain

Chaoyang Xue et al.

Summary: In summertime, fertilized fields in the North China Plain act as a strong source of HONO, accelerating daytime photochemistry and increasing regional pollutants like O-3. This emphasizes the need to consider HONO emissions in addressing regional air quality deterioration, especially considering the severe O-3 pollution in the region.

Vertical distributions of wintertime atmospheric nitrogenous compounds and the corresponding OH radicals production in Leshan, southwest China

Chengzhi Xing et al.

Summary: Ground-based MAX-DOAS observations were conducted in Leshan, southwest China, from December 2 to December 21, 2018, for the first time in the Sichuan Basin. The study found characteristic ranges and averages for aerosol extinction, NO2, and HONO concentrations, as well as the importance of nitrogen oxides for atmospheric oxidative capacity.

Evaluating the sensitivity of radical chemistry and ozone formation to ambient VOCs and NOx in Beijing

Lisa K. Whalley et al.

Summary: Measurements of various radicals were taken during the AIRPRO campaign in central Beijing in the summer of 2017, showing elevated concentrations. OH reactivity and radical budgets were found to be sensitive to NO concentrations, with potential missing sources and sinks of OH and RO2 under certain conditions. The modeling results indicate the need for better understanding of RO2 species and their reactions to accurately simulate ozone production in VOC-rich environments like Beijing.
