A Reference Range of Dart-Thrower's Motion at the Wrist in a Healthy Adult Population

Paul H. C. Stirling et al.

Summary: This study quantified the reference range of DTM in normal individuals, finding that female subjects had significantly increased range of motion compared with males, and older subjects had significantly increased dominant arc of motion but reduced nondominant arc of motion. High reliability was observed for goniometric measurement of DTM.

Cortical and trabecular bone structure of the hominoid capitate

Emma E. Bird et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between morphological variation in the capitate bone and locomotor differences among hominoids, finding distinct differences in trabecular and cortical bone architecture between bipedal, knuckle-walking, and suspensory hominoids. The thicker distal cortical bone in knuckle-walking and suspensory hominoids sets them apart from bipedal Homo, while additional isotropic trabeculae in the proximal capitate differentiate knuckle-walking taxa from suspensory and bipedal taxa. Results suggest that internal bone structure reflects different forces and functional adaptations across hominoids.

Effects of Captivity on the Morphology of the Insertion Sites of the Palmar Radiocarpal Ligaments in Hominoid Primates

Aroa Casado et al.

Summary: This study examines the differences in the insertion sites of palmar radiocarpal ligaments in wild and captive gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans. The results suggest that captivity may lead to changes in locomotion behavior, resulting in anatomical modifications. Creating more natural environments in zoological facilities could potentially reduce the impact of these differences and improve the well-being of captive primates.

Kinetics of stone tool production among novice and expert tool makers

Erin Marie Williams-Hatala et al.

Summary: Expert stone tool makers experienced significantly lower cumulative pressure magnitudes and pressure-time integral magnitudes compared with novices. There is a similar and consistent emphasis on the thumb by both skill groups, indicating the importance of this digit in stabilizing the hammerstone for both novices and experts. Additionally, digit II showed exclusive emphasis in expert knappers, suggesting a potential osteological signal diagnostic of habitual expert tool production.
