Effects of nano-enabled agricultural strategies on food quality: Current knowledge and future research needs

Alejandra Gomez et al.

Summary: The use of nano-enabled agricultural products, such as nanofertilizers and nanopesticides, is increasingly feasible for improving agrochemical delivery efficiency to crop plants. Experimental results suggest that nanoagrochemicals have the potential to reduce environmental impact and increase crop production, but also result in alterations in crop quality. Additional research is needed to understand the specific effects on human health from consuming agricultural products treated with nano-agrochemicals.

Combined foliar and soil application of silica nanoparticles enhances the growth, flowering period and flower characteristics of marigold (Tagetes erecta L.)

Eman A. Attia et al.

Summary: The study found that silica nanoparticles have the potential to enhance plant growth, with different concentrations and application methods showing higher growth parameters. Soil application of 200 mg L-1 SiNPs increased plant height, number of branches, and root length, while foliar application of the same concentration significantly improved flower traits. The enhancement effect of SiNPs on plant biometrics and flower properties is strongly linked to the Si content in plant leaves.

Silicon dioxide nanoparticles orchestrate carbon and nitrogen metabolism in pea seedlings to cope with broomrape infection

Ibrahim I. Shabbaj et al.

Summary: Phelipanche infection reduces photosynthesis and growth of pea, while pre-treatment with SiNPs alleviates the detrimental effects of infection by increasing silicon accumulation, improving photosynthesis and sugar metabolism, enhancing organic acid accumulation, and boosting the production of amino acids and fatty acids. This study also demonstrated that SiNPs reduce membrane damage, increase osmoprotectants and antioxidants, and inhibit photorespiration, thus offering a potential strategy to combat the virulence of Phelipanche infection.
