Diffuse solar radiation and canopy photosynthesis in a changing environment

Maxime Durand et al.

Summary: The amount of sunlight received by plants is influenced by cloudiness and pollution. Changes in cloud cover and aerosol concentrations will impact photosynthesis and terrestrial ecosystem productivity. Research has shown that clouds and aerosols can alter the spectral composition of incoming solar radiation, thus affecting the process of photosynthesis in plants.

Canopy processing of N deposition increases short-term leaf N uptake and photosynthesis, but not long-term N retention for aspen seedlings

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The processing of nitrogen in forest canopies can impact short-term leaf nitrogen supply and photosynthesis, but not long-term nitrogen retention. There were no significant differences in plant biomass, nitrogen concentration, and leaf nitrogen resorption between canopy and soil nitrogen applications. This highlights the importance of considering canopy nitrogen processing for accurately predicting the impact of nitrogen deposition.

Moving beyond the incorrect but useful paradigm: reevaluating big-leaf and multilayer plant canopies to model biosphere-atmosphere fluxes - a review

Gordon B. Bonan et al.

Summary: This article revisits a 30-40-year-old debate about the representation of plant canopies in weather forecast and climate models. The study finds that using a multilayer representation of plant canopies more accurately simulates fluxes compared to a single-layer representation. The differences between single-layer and multilayer representations suggest that the land surface modeling community should revisit the big-leaf surface flux parameterizations used in models.

Accounting for canopy structure improves hyperspectral radiative transfer and sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence representations in a new generation Earth System model

Renato K. Braghiere et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the impact of incorporating an implicit clumping index into ESMs for global scale vegetation canopy representation on factors such as hyperspectral shortwave radiation partitioning and Sun-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF). Results show that considering canopy structural heterogeneity is critical for calculating hyperspectral radiation transfer accurately. Including vertical and horizontal canopy structure when deriving SIF can significantly improve model predictions.

Testing stomatal models at the stand level in deciduous angiosperm and evergreen gymnosperm forests using CliMA Land (v0.1)

Yujie Wang et al.

Summary: This study integrated stomatal optimization models and comprehensive RT models into a new Earth system model, showing high accuracy in simulating land surface processes including carbon and water fluxes, leaf and canopy reflectance, and fluorescence spectra. The optimization model, in particular, exhibited improved skill in predicting water flux and the combination of stomatal and RT models proved to be effective in linking canopy optical properties with remote sensing data.
