Aerosol and Cloud Experiments in the Eastern North Atlantic (ACE-ENA)

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: Marine low clouds have a significant impact on global climate, but their representation in global climate models is currently inadequate. Understanding how marine low clouds respond to changes in atmospheric greenhouse gases and aerosols is a major source of uncertainty in climate simulations. The eastern North Atlantic region is a unique area with diverse marine boundary layer clouds, making it an excellent location to study the impact of aerosols on cloud properties. The Aerosol and Cloud Experiments in Eastern North Atlantic campaign was conducted to improve the understanding of the marine boundary layer cloud and aerosol interactions, as well as the cloud condensation nuclei budget.

Strong Deviations from Thermodynamically Expected Phase Partitioning of Low-Molecular-Weight Organic Acids during One Year of Rural Measurements

Bastian Stieger et al.

Summary: An upgraded MARGA monitor was used at the TROPOS research site Melpitz for a year to investigate the partitioning of organic acids between gas and particle phases. The study found that the formation of chemical association complexes and organic salts affects the partitioning of organic acids towards the gas phase, resulting in higher Henry's law constants compared to literature values. Unexpectedly low Henry's law constants were observed for methanesulfonic acid, which has high solubility, for the first time. These findings highlight the need to consider the processes influencing the partitioning of carboxylic acids towards the particle phase in multi-phase chemistry models.

The Importance of the Representation of DMS Oxidation in Global Chemistry-Climate Simulations

Erik Hans Hoffmann et al.

Summary: The oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) plays a crucial role in the formation of natural sulfate aerosols and its impact on climate. The study found that the inclusion of multiphase methane sulfonic acid (MSA) formation pathways in aerosol particles can contribute significantly to the sulfate aerosol burden in the Southern Ocean and Arctic/Antarctic regions. Furthermore, the findings suggest the need for further laboratory and model studies on the atmospheric multiphase oxidation of DMS to better understand its impact on aerosol radiative forcing.

Radiative Forcing of Nitrate Aerosols From 1975 to 2010 as Simulated by MOSAIC Module in CESM2-MAM4

Z. Lu et al.

Summary: By incorporating the MOSAIC module and coupling it with the MAM4 module, the study effectively simulates the spatiotemporal distribution of nitrate aerosols. The research findings indicate a significant increase in nitrate aerosol radiative effect in China and India from 1975 to 2010, showing a warming effect due to competing effects between sulfate and nitrate aerosols as cloud condensation nuclei.

Organic Sulfur Products and Peroxy Radical Isomerization in the OH Oxidation of Dimethyl Sulfide

Qing Ye et al.

Summary: The atmospheric oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is a significant natural source of sulfate particles, affecting the global radiative effect of aerosols. The study focuses on understanding the chemistry of intermediate organic sulfur species, including hydroperoxymethyl thioformate. Chamber experiments revealed rapid decay of many organic sulfur species, indicating the importance of aerosol uptake and surface loss processes.

Global tropospheric halogen (Cl, Br, I) chemistry and its impact on oxidants

Xuan Wang et al.

Summary: An updated mechanism for tropospheric halogen chemistry in the GEOS-Chem model improves the efficiency of recycling and mobilization of bromine radicals, resulting in a lower global mean tropospheric BrO mixing ratio of 0.19 ppt. Model simulations show that Cl atoms contribute 0.8% of the global oxidation of methane. The study highlights the importance of halogen chemistry in influencing tropospheric oxidants and ozone concentrations.

Summary: The ACE-ENA study investigated aerosol and cloud properties in the Eastern North Atlantic region, revealing a predominance of sulfate and highly processed organics in aerosol chemical composition. The presence of particulate methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and its gas-phase precursor dimethyl sulfide (DMS) was detected, highlighting the relationship between ocean productivity and aerosol formation.
