Gel-like carbon dots: A high-performance future photocatalyst

Yiqun Zhou et al.

Summary: In order to safeguard water resources and prevent waterborne diseases, the photocatalytic degradation of water pollutants has attracted global interest. Metal-based photocatalysts have shown low efficiency and risk of secondary pollution, leading to a demand for highly efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalysts with appropriate band gap, such as carbon dots (CDs). This study explored the photocatalytic activity of gel-like CDs (G-CDs) and demonstrated their enhanced performance compared to other CD species, as well as their synergistic effect with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) in the form of CD-C3N4. The main contributors to the photocatalytic degradation with G-CDs were identified as superoxide radicals (O-2•) and holes, which were replaced by O-2• and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) with the addition of g-C3N4, leading to excellent photocatalytic stabilities after multiple cycles of dye degradation. Additionally, the nontoxicity and environmental friendliness of G-CDs and CD-C3N4 were confirmed through sea urchin cytotoxicity tests, highlighting their potential as future photocatalysts.

Modulation of red-light emission from carbon quantum dots in acid-based environment and the detection of chromium (III) ions

Ju Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, red-emitting carbon quantum dots (R-CQDs) were synthesized from wine lees via simple heat treatment. The R-CQDs showed pH-sensitive photoluminescence emission and quenching response to chromium (III) ions, making them potential candidates for pH sensors and selective detection of the metal ions. The findings contribute to the exploration of practical applications for cost-effective and easily prepared CQDs.
